Clinical Interests:
Wrist pain: post-traumatic, atraumatic; arthritis
Thumb pain: post-traumatic, atraumatic; arthritis
Hand/wrist/arm pain and hand weakness, particularly with negative work-up (eg, normal blood tests, radiographs, MRI, EMG/NCV, bone scan), and lack of response to treatment (eg, oral medication, splint, exercise, physical therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy; and/or surgery). Dr. Ericson has given presentations locally, nationally and internationally on this pattern of complaints, specifically with regard to the anatomic aspects of their etiology, evaluation, and treatment. This pattern of problems is common in patients with joint hypermobility, such as Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, and also many women.
Peripheral nerve problems: carpal tunnel syndrome, pronator syndrome, anterior interosseous nerve palsy, anterior interosseous nerve syndrome, ulnar nerve palsy, radial nerve palsy; peripheral neuropathy, diabetic peripheral neuropathy
Dupuytren Contracture: needle aponeurotomy, fasciectomy, z-plasty, Xiaflex®, DigitWidget®. Regarding needle aponeurotomy, Dr. Ericson has visited and observed Dr. Charlie Eaton in Jupiter, Florida, and Dr. Henri Lellouche at the Hospital Lariboisière in Paris, France, performing the needle aponeurotomy technique.
Failed previous hand surgery: Failed carpal tunnel release, failed DeQuervain’s release, failed lateral epicondylectomy, failed radial tunnel release; recurrent Dupuytren contracture; complications of hand surgery.
Innovations in hand surgery: improved diagnostic precision, minimally invasive surgical techniques, more effective communication; smaller, less painful scars.
